Benfica hosts Basel in a match from Group A of the UEFA Champions League.

It was a disastrious campaign for Benfica. The Portuguese giants have not won a single point from their five games played in the group so far. They have a record of five losses and zero points, which means that they have lost their chances of even progressing to the Europa League.

Now Benfica will have the chance to at least win some points in their last match and defend their honour against Basel.

As for Basel, the Swiss team is currenltly second in the group with 9 points – the same amount of points as the third CSKA Moscow. In the same time CSKA are visiting the Old Trafford to play against Manchester United, so everyone at Basel would hope that the English giant will help them qualify for the next phase.

The first game between Benfica and Basel was a terrible one for the Portuguese team. In Switzerland Basel managed to win with 5-0, which was a shameful result for Benfica. Basel’s case is a curious one, because they are not performing at their best levels in the Swiss Super League, but they are playing very good in the Champions League.

This win is giving Basel some serious confidence before the match in Lisboa. They know that a win in the last match will guarantee them a place in the 1/8-finals, no matter what’s about to happen between Manchester United and CSKA Moscow in the other game.

As for Benfica, they’d want to forget this Champions League campaign as soon as possible. Benfica are one of the great clubs in the history of football, but this was certainly not their best season in the Champions League. They will try to return stronger next year.
